Steps to establish a youth council for Uckfield are under way.
Two students from Uckfield Community Technology College gained the backing of town councillors this week.
Harry Elphick (16) and Beth Burchett (14) spoke at the council’s annual meeting. They emphasised the importance of getting young people involved in the town and to voting at elections.
Cllr Paul Sparks warmly welcomed the move saying he had been advocating for five or six years that Uckfield have a youth mayor.
He said: “It is vitally important that we engage with the youth. This is an excellent way forward.
Former town mayor, Cllr John Carvey, said it had been a privilege for him to meet one or two youth mayors during his period of office. They had always spoken extremely well.
Councillors formally agreed to welcomed the initiative and asked the town clerk, Ashley Serpis, and the town mayor, Cllr Ian Smith, to work with young people to bring about the formation of a youth council.
