SET TO GO: The payphone in Browns Close, Uckfield, along with two others

Where are Uckfield’s ‘unused’ BT payphones?

Two BT payphones in Uckfield have not been used to make calls in the last 12 months.

They are at Snatts Road, Ringles Cross; and New Road, Ridgewood.

The calll-box  in Browns Close, near the Manor Park shops, has only been used to make 30 calls in the same period.

BT is consulting on the removal of these low usage telephone boxes and similar ones in Wealden.

There are a total of 72 listed for removal across the district.

BT is required to consult with parishes before taking any action.

The company has suggested that councils refer to the recent Ofcom affordability report which highlights that most people do not view payphones as essential.

Uckfield Town Council is due to make a decision on whether to object to the proposals.
