Wealden MP visits Uckfield in ice-cream van

Wealden MP Nus Ghani raised eyebrows this week as she crossed the constituency holding surgeries in an ice-cream van.

News quickly spread when her van parked in Uckfield High Street yesterday morning and people were able to raise their concerns with her as she sat at a table outside Hartfields Produce Store.

She chose this mode of transport because of its high visibility and because people have fond memories of buying ice-creams at them.

“I’m not serving soft scoop ice-cream today though,” she said. “I’m providing a public service instead.”

She added that there was a bonus in having the van because if it rained, or people wanted more privacy as they spoke to her, they could go inside it.

Having parked in the High Street for an hour or so the MP’s ice-cream van headed off to the Highlands Inn for another surgery. More stops were planned in East Hoathly, Hellingly and Hailsham.

On Tuesday Nus spent 13 hours on the road visiting Crowborough, Frant, Wadhurst, Mayfield, Forest Row and Hartfield.

The MP normally holds monthly surgeries at Uckfield Civic Centre – appointments can be booked by calling her office on 020 7219 4619 – but she said that during the summer she has more time to get out and about and into villages.

Conversations were confidential and she guaranteed she would not discuss individual cases but she said issues often included immigration, health or businesses wanting to raise concerns.

Nus noted that in the north of the constituency she noticed that concerns often revolved around trains and planes. In the south people were concerned about communications, Broadband, and mobile connectivity.
