Cllr Roy Galley, the council’s cabinet member for waste and recycling said yesterday the contractors should relieve current pressure on Kier and allow their crews to work elsewhere.
Cllr Galley said: “The service we are receiving from Kier at the moment is appalling, and there is no immediate prospect of that getting significantly better. The problems are extended throughout Wealden.
“We cannot allow this situation to continue so we have notified Kier that we intend to invoke our step-in rights which will allow us to bring in outside contractors this week to clear Bring Sites.”
Cllr Galley said the council hopes this measure will allow Kier to focus on household waste and recycling collections where problems caused by vehicle breakdowns and staff shortages, has meant a number of collection rounds have been missed over the past week.
He said this would apply to some 17 Wealden Bring Sites which “desperately” need to be emptied. The community Bring Sites take a range of recyclables.
Those to be cleared are at:
- Uckfield – Tesco car park, Regency Close and Luxford Field
- Crowborough – Croft Road and Jarvis Brook
- Forest Row
- Pevensey Bay
