Volunteers give football club premises new lease of life

Players of Buxted Football Club who now have refurbished premises thanks to volunteers and a generous plumbing company.

Buxted Football Club and the David Butcher Pavilion have undergone significant improvements during lockdown thanks to the efforts of volunteers.

They have painstakingly decorated and upgraded the interior while also giving the outside a new lease of life with crisp white cladding and the addition of three picture windows that provide a view of the pitch from the comfort of the clubhouse.

The bar has been completely refurbished with new lighting, improved refrigeration and customer service facilities.

Outdoor furniture

New outdoor furniture has been added, providing a place for visitors to be seated, and there has been significant investment in the pitch with tonnes of topsoil being added, as well as specialist aeration treatments to improve drainage.

There was one big issue that the volunteers weren’t skilled enough to deal with and that was a 1960s hot water system that, according to football club members, wouldn’t have looked out of place on the antiques roadshow.

Buxted FC chairman Richard Turner said copper cylinders, installed when the pavilion was first built, were failing and inefficient, and quotations were sought for the costly, but vital, work of replacing them.

Plumbing

Several plumbing companies were asked to quote but Richard said his breath was taken away when Village Heating’s director Darren Standing offered to do the work free of charge.

Richard said: “Darren stated that replacing copper cylinders with like for like replacements was only one option and went on to say that Village Heating would like to supply and install two of the latest efficient high capacity stainless steel cylinders completely free of charge.”

True to their word, Village Heating sent one of their specialist installers and after a long, hard day’s work the job was complete – leaving the David Butcher Pavilion ready to face the next 60 years.

Richard said: “We cannot thank Darren and his team at Village Heating enough, what they have done for the club and the community is astounding.”
