Vandals destroyed a picnic table at the Millennium Green in Uckfield over the Easter holiday.
Chairman of the Uckfield Millennium Green Trust Mick Harker said they came equipped with a can of inflammable liquid to burn away fixings and set the table alight.
They also destroyed a small bench that was also bolted to the ground.
He added: “Not content with the damage inflicted on their first visit, they then returned on Monday to pile up the broken woodwork to start a new fire to complete the destruction.
“Luckily a member of the public saw the two youngsters in action and called the fire brigade to extinguish the flames.
“Unfortunately, the damage is pretty extensive and rebuilding looks an unlikely option.”
The police have been informed.
Mick said many families love to sit at the tables and enjoy the tranquility offered by the secluded dog free area and the attack followed one less than 12 months ago when another picnic table was destroyed.
He added: “We were lucky that a generous sponsor stepped forward last time and donated this picnic table; I’m not sure we can ask them again.
“We have suffered from a spate of vandalism over the last couple of years, with the wall and paving stones around our Millennium Feature under constant attack.
“We would ask members of the public to keep their eyes open for such acts of anti-social behaviour and inform the police if they see something being attacked.”
Mick said the Millennium Green Trust is not part of the town council and has no guaranteed income. It relies on donations, fund-raising, and membership fees from its ‘Friends of the Green’ organisation, to fund its activities.
