Vacher Gardens wins prestigious award

Uckfield-based business Vacher Gardens has won a prestigious award from Plumpton College for its work with apprentices.

The Employer of the Year Award in the Horticulture category was presented in a ceremony at Mid Sussex Golf Club by college principal Jeremy Kerswell.

Company owner Chris Vacher said: “We have been working in partnership with the college for the last six years and have taken on a number of apprentices during this period. I am delighted our work has been recognised by the presentation of this award.”

There are 144 apprentices currently studying in the Horticulture section at Plumpton and many are working with local companies.

Vacher Gardens’ current apprentice is 19-year-old Alex Sheppard who has been working for Chris for more than 18 months.

Chris said: “He already plays a key role in delivering the service we provide to local gardens, business premises and sports grounds.” The company’s clients include Newick Cricket Club and the Armadillos who play at Sheffield Park.

The partnership with Plumpton provides the framework for the professional development of apprentices and delivers a recognised industry qualification.

“Alex himself is particularly interested in the fine turf aspect of the work and has become skilled at preparing good quality cricket pitches,” said Chris.
