Uckfield Festival is forging ahead with plans for this year’s event.
Organisers are determined the town will get its summer highlight this year, in one shape or another.
This year’s event is scheduled to run from Friday, July 9, to Sunday, July 18, with the co-ordinating committee members saying they will not be deterred by the Covid-19 pandemic.
David Sudbery, who chairs the festival committee, said last year was difficult but they did their best and provided a full week’s entertainment on a YouTube channel.
Element of doubt
“This year, there is still an element of doubt over it but one way or another we are determined the festival is going to come back on the streets of Uckfield.
“If it is not possible to go back on the streets because of the Coronavirus situation, we are intending to make a bit more of a show online so we can make sure the town has something it can be proud of,” he said.
He said initial contact had been made with schools and they could still make displays. The festival committee would get professional help to put it online, if a street parade was not possible.
“We really are hoping that somehow we will be able to get out on the streets,” he said.
Mr Sudberry was speaking at a meeting of Uckfield Town Council finance sub-committee where he was applying for a grant from the council.
Members recommended Uckfield Festival receive a grant of £3,000.
The recommendation goes to a meeting of the council’s general purposes committee for approval next month.
