Uckfield waterskier is competing in European Championships

Uckfield waterskier Sam Clark is competing in European Championships in Dunoon, to the west of Scotland this week.

She came third in her first race on Sunday, and was also due to race yesterday, tomorrow and on Saturday.

Sam is competing in Ladies F1 where speeds of more than 90mph are possible in ideal conditions.

Gary Clark is the driver of Sam’s boat, while her observer seated facing backwards is Stephen Young.

Her boat – driven by her father Gary Clark – is powered by two 300hp outboard engines but she expects to be racing against Austrian and Belgian women towed by much faster V8 powered boats.

Sam, aged 20, from Rocks Park, is watched the whole time by observer Stephen Young, from a seat facing backwards for the whole of each 40 minute race.

Both Stephen and her father are both vastly experienced.

Sam skis on a racing mono ski, more than two metres long, about 60 metres behind the boat depending on conditions. The boat can be filled with water ballast while under way to help flatten any waves.
