Water skier Samantha Clark in action.

Uckfield water-skier to represent Britain in world championships

Uckfield student Samantha Clark has been selected to represent Great Britain in this year’s World Waterski Racing Championships to be held in Tenerife in September.samantha_clark_cup_1

She fought off strong competition in the final selection race in Weston Super Mare last weekend to secure her place in the Junior Girls category.

Although still 15 and young enough to ski in the ‘kids’ classes she stepped up early to the Juniors where she races against boys and girls aged up to 17.

Sam, who attends Uckfield Community Technology College and lives in Hunters Way, will be skiing behind a 21 foot long boat powered by a 250 hp engine capable of speeds up to 80 mph but in the rough and unpredictable waters around the Canaries speeds are expected to be much less.

A real family team, Sam’s boat will be driven by father Gary Clark and her observer will be her uncle Robert Waite.

Sam’s mother Julie also skied in the British team many times in the 1990s.

With team selection now secured Sam moves on to racing in the prestigious Viersel Diamond Race, a European Cup event held near Antwerp next weekend.
