Uckfield triathlete Jamie Bedwell secured second place in a top class field at the Eastbourne Triathlon on Sunday.
This was Jamie’s best result so far. He said it was a fantastic race. He beat former world champion Richard Stannard and came second to another world champion Ben Allen.
“What a day … Finally it all came together! With a top class field including two former world champions, Ben Allen and Richard Stannard as well as top GB elites and age groupers, Eastbourne tri was set to be a great event! With the additional support and excitement of a home crowd I was raring to go.
“After a great start in the swim, the strong current made it difficult for the group to stay together and the field was soon split up.
“I was able to find a clear line and come out the water in sixth position just behind the top guys. A quick T1 put me in a great position to pick off a few guys and hold second for the majority of the bike course, not far behind Ben.
“The bike was a tough course. I truly believe today’s tri was one of the toughest courses out there, climbing up onto Beachy Head, descending into East Dean and climbing back up into Birling Gap before an out and back to the Sovereign roundabout.
“A small misunderstanding between Ben and I in T2 and I found myself in first place heading out onto the run. Ben quickly caught up and it was head to head up onto marathon hill, a tough climb and Ben continued to kick.
“I could only respond so many times until he eventually broke the gap just before the turn around point. The gap then stayed even up until the finish no amount of work could make up the gap and I finished the race in second!
“Chuffed to bits with the result, the support was incredible and I would to thank everyone who came along to support, watch and get involved. Eastbourne triathlon has the potential to become massive and I will without doubt be back next year hoping to go one better! Also a massive thanks to all my sponsors.”
