An Uckfield Line train at the platform in London Bridge's rebuilt station

Uckfield trains face major changes in 2018

Uckfield Line rail passengers face an upheaval next May when a new timetable is set to come into operation.

If the proposals go ahead, more trains will depart Uckfield and Buxted in the morning.

The bad news is that journey times are being extended and the first departure is 15 minutes later than now, and will stop more frequently on its way to London Bridge.

The proposals are out for consultation.

The early morning flyer, which currently gets into London in 1hr 12mins minutes, would take 1hr 22mins and arrive not long before 7am, instead of just before 6.30am at present.

Calling at all stations

All ‘up’ services would call at all stations between Uckfield and Oxted.

The current pattern of departures from Uckfield in the mornings is at 05:16, 05:40, 06:30, 07:05, 07:31, 08:01, 08:33 and then hourly throughout the day at XX:34 until the evening peak, when a half-hourly service northbound resumes.

Proposals for Mondays to Fridays

Proposed services departing Uckfield Monday to Friday:

05:31 arriving at London Bridge at 06:53

06:03 arriving at London Bridge at 07:23. (The second train from Uckfield at present is the 05:40 which arrives at London Bridge at 07:00).

The proposed new timetable then shows a half-hourly timetable, with departures at 06:33, 07:03, 07:33, 08:03 and 08.33.

This half-hourly pattern with departures at XX:03 and XX:33 continues until 10:33. After that the service becomes hourly at XX:33 through the day.

Evening peak

In the evening peak, the service returns to half-hourly with Uckfield departures at XX:03 and XX:33 from 16:33 until 20:33.

Then there are services at 21:33 and 22:33.

London Bridge evening departures

There also changes proposed for trains out of London Bridge to Uckfield in the evenings.

Now, the main direct commuter trains from London Bridge run at 16:38, 17:08, 18:06, 19:08 and 20:04.

There is also a shuttle service between Oxted and Uckfield.

Some of the present evening peak trains from London Bridge do not call at all intermediate stations after Oxted. Under the proposals, all services will call at all stations.

The proposal shows trains departing London Bridge at 16:07 (arriving Uckfield at 17:22), 16:37 (arriving at 17:52), 17:07 (arriving at 18:22), 17:37 (arriving at 18:52), 18:07 (arriving at 19:22), 18:37 (arriving 19:52) 19:07 (arriving at 20:22).

From then on the service is hourly with departures XX:07 until 23:07.

It means there are extra peak time trains out of London Bridge but no dedicated Oxted shuttle.

The changes will be introduced upon completion of the Thameslink programme through London Bridge, which will see East Grinstead train extended to serve stations north of London.
