Gary, 25, who lives in New Town, will make his home bow at Arlington on Sunday (July 19) when the IT First Eagles takes on Coventry Storm in the National League.

For Gary, it will be a lifetime’s ambition.

He was a contemporary of Lewis Bridger in under-15 races and has ridden for a number of clubs in the third tier of the sport.

Gary last rode in 2012 for the Isle of Wight and has taken time out of the sport, admitting he “lost interest”.

He said: “I said I would only do it again if I had decent equipment. Then I got the call from Eastbourne.”

He practised on Sunday, July 5, at Mildenhall and commented: “I don’t think I have ever felt that good on a bike as I did there.

“I am looking forward to racing again. It has been a lifetime ambition to race for Eastbourne. I feel ready.”

He thanked Connor and Martin Dugard for the help they are giving to get his speedway career back on track.

Club director Connor Dugard said: “Gary is a raw talent and we loved what we saw at Mildenhall.

“I think he will give us renewed impetus as we come to the business end of the season.”

Gary has asked any business interested in sponsoring him to contact him, via info@eastbourneeagles.co

Eagles are in contention to win both the National Trophy and the National League KO Cup.  They are fourth in the league on 13 points having ridden six matches. Birmingham are top after riding nine times.

GARY COTTHAM’S BRITISH CAREER: (2004-05) Rye House II; (2006) Rye House II, Sittingbourne; (2007-08) Rye House II; (2009) Mildenhall; (2010) Weymouth; (2011-12) Isle of Wight; (2015) Eastbourne.
