Olive Sanctuary to hold free online event

The Olive Sanctuary is holding a free online Zoom event on Friday (February 5) to assist with wellbeing during these challenging times.

It will take place at 7pm and will include demonstrations of practical techniques around stress reduction and what we should be eating as part of a balanced diet.

There will be simple techniques to use at home to reduce stress and anxiety, nutritional advice to support immune systems, and an introduction to meditation to calm the mind.

New compost ‘drive through’ opens at Staverton Nursery

A new compost ‘drive through’ has opened at Staverton Nursery. This enables you to have bags of compost, bark, manure, mulch and more loaded into your car for you and pay the attendant directly.

A similar service proved very popular last year.

Summer flowering bulbs are now in stock, as are lots of shrubs and trees and hedging plants. It’s also worth knowing that hedging can now be bought online via the Staverton website.

There are plenty of seed potatoes, but some varieties are selling out.

Spring gifts will be arriving soon and some solar lights are in stock again.

The Spade and Spoon van selling homemade snacks and drinks is still open, but only for takeaway food.

Cole’s Menswear is holding an online sale with many items reduced by 50%.

Carvills says thank you

Carvills says thank you to loyal customers who have been using their click and collect service via their online store or simply by calling them on the phone.

A small team is on site Monday-Friday 9.00am-5.00pm, so feel free to get in touch with any questions via phone, email or social media, they would love to hear from you.

In line with Government guidance Carvills workshop and design services are open, this means they can come to you for a socially distanced visit to discuss your curtains, blinds or reupholstery needs.

Throughout January customers borrowed sample books using a call and collect service. If you would like to do the same please email or telephone to discuss what you are looking for and then call in to borrow the books.

On their return all books are quarantined for 72 hours before being available to borrow again.

The shop says: “As part of the Uckfield High Street community Carvills thank all of you who are continuing to shop locally and supporting our marvellous town.”

Industrial matt black metal and wood shelving is still proving popular at Carvills this year.

Carvills super-sized pouffes are now available in five colours.

W E Clark & Son offers 15% discount on online purchases

W E Clark & Son jewellery store remains closed to customers but the website is still open with the offer of 15% off prices there.

Purchases can be posted or you can ‘click and collect’ from either the Lewes or Uckfield branch.

Paint, paint, and more paint at Josefina

Paint, paint, and more paint is what customers are looking for online at Josefina where you can choose your colour, pay, and have it delivered.

Josefina supplies Autentico Paint, an all-in-one, water-based paint which is child-safe and easy to use. It can be used for indoor and outdoor furniture, in bathrooms, and kitchens, and on walls.

You can also order handles and knob for your lockdown projects.


The Josefina workshop at Ashgrove Farm, Piltdown, is open and busy with furniture orders and you can click your choice and collect from there.

For the future the Josefina team is planning to decorate the showroom area at the workshop and fully kit it out with room sets, then open for appointments, and walk-ins.

Visits to the workshop have always been popular with customers because they can see work in progress on all of the items there.

Sew n Sew continues to offer click and collect service

Sew n Sew and Haberdashery continues to offer a click and collect service.

If you know what you need just phone to make an appointment to collect your supplies.

Delivery can be arranged for people isolating during the pandemic.

Andy Coppins, who runs the shop with his wife Dawn, said they are very busy as people turn to crafts during lockdown. There is plenty of wool available for knitting, and fabrics for sewing projects.

It’s also worth asking about sewing machines because Sew n Sew has some available direct from their engineer. They currently have two Singers, made in France, described as great machines, built to last, easy to use and being sold with warranty.

Takeaways on the menu at Hartfields

Hartfields is concentrating on takeaways at the moment and has just added to the choice of foods available with a selection of handmade sausage rolls, including Pork, Sage, and Apple, and a Spinach, Squash, and Chilli Veggie option.

Breakfast, lunches, and sandwiches are all available, from light bites, such as croissants (plain or filled), teacakes and sausage or bacon sandwiches, to cooked classics including the 1st Class of egg, bacon, sausage, homemade beans, mushroom and toast.

Handmade sausage rolls at Hartfields where there’s a vegan option too.

Breakfasts with a twist include fluffy American pancakes with fruit compote, honey, vanilla ice cream, or two streaky bacon, maple syrup, or hot chocolate sauce and banana.

There are salads on the lunch menu, burritos, burgers, or jacket potatoes, and sandwiches include BLT, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo, and Feta, Pesto and Sun-dried Tomato Wrap.

Hartfields is happy to modify many of its dishes to take account of food intolerances, just ask for details.

Decorate pottery at home

Kilnwood Studio, currently closed due to lockdown restrictions, is offering a click and collect service for Decorate at Home packs.

These can be bought through the studio website. While you are there look out for a new section offering gift ideas for Valentine’s Day.

Or, you can buy a gift voucher which can be used, either for a studio session once the studio is open again, or be redeemed in the online shop.

There’s been positive feedback from Decorate at Home customers saying it was nice to be able to take a little more time over painting, enabling them to produce a more detailed design, see pictures.

Examples of pottery decorated at home, then returned to Kilnwood Studio to be glazed and fired.

If you are home schooling, painting pottery, or decorating/modelling with foam clay, could make a fun and alternative art lesson.

Gaynor Robson who runs Kilnwood Studio said this can be a very calming and therapeutic experience, helping to develop hand/eye coordination.

Gaynor is making plans for when the studio is allowed to open. She says new stock lines and paint colours will be added to celebrate the coming of spring.

The refreshments area will be improved with the addition of a new coffee machine and fridge.

Online business remains open at Diane Hutt Gallery

The online business at the Diane Hutt Gallery remains open with a wide selection of artworks, including some from popular artists for Valentine’s Day.

The gallery remains closed as it is primarily a ‘customer facing’ retail picture framing business and so is classed as non-essential.

It does also service trade customers with picture framing and will continue to help in these circumstances as best it can.

Best Health Food Shop now sells bread

Best Health Food Shop in Uckfield now sells bread, and manager Jenny says it is really good. It comes in weekly and includes sour dough and seeded varieties.

The bread comes from The Sussex Kitchen, a craft bakery at Sheffield Park.

Best Health Food Shop is also offering organic fruit and veg boxes for the first time with prices starting at £11.95 for a small vegetable box with seven different types of seasonal vegetables, this is recommended for couples or singles who love their veggies.

At the other end of the scale is a large plastic free fruit and veg box with ten different types of seasonal vegetables and salad lines with the addition of four fruit lines selected each week. This is said to be perfect for families or for couples who eat more fruit and veg than most.

Don’t forget Best Health Food Shop has a well-stocked Zero Waste refill section where you can reuse and refill your own bottles with a range of household products.

There are loose food items in easy to use dispensers too.

The Little Sports Shop continues to offer a click and collect services as well as free local home delivery.

PipeDreams offers click and collect too

PipeDreams is offering free local delivery, and click and collect, from store. Customers can purchase from the website and select ‘pick up from store’ at the checkout, leave a telephone number and delivery, or an appointment to collect, can be arranged.

It is worth keeping an eye on the PipeDreams Facebook page for updates too. Feel free to like and share it.

Julie Hobbs, who runs the shop with husband David, said: “We have good stocks of Skateboards and Scooters to keep the kids exercised and outdoors, fitness mats, skipping ropes and exercise gear too.

If you fancy a project you can build your own skateboard. Pick your skateboard deck, undercarriage kit and you are ready to go. All available on the PipeDreams website.

SG Home Interiors is still busy designing and installing kitchens, bedrooms, and bathrooms.

And, even while the Bell Lane showroom remains closed, because of the Coronavirus lockdown, a contact and collect service is proving to be popular.
