Nearly 400 children took park in the annual road safety day on the Luxford Field, Uckfield, yesterday (June 18).
Twelve primary schools were represented: Harlands, Manor, Rocks Park, St Philip’s and Holy Cross from the town plus Buxted, Framfield, Little Horsted, High Hurstwood, Nutley, Bonners (Maresfield) and Blackboys.
Safety displays and exhibitions were staged by a number of organisations including Sussex Police, British Transport Police, East Sussex Fire and Rescue, Kier Services (ESCC Highways), train operator Southern, Network Rail, Veolia and Waitrose.
Children circulated around the various displays and activities.
A poster competition, with the theme of Distractions Cause Accidents, ran alongside the event with 54 winners receiving £10 gift vouchers to spend at Kid’s Stuff during a presentation ceremony in the Weald Hall before the events on the field began.
Uckfield and District Lions Club and the town council paid for the vouchers.
The presentations were made by Uckfield Town Mayor, Cllr Louise Eastwood, and Cllr Paul Meakin.
The safety day was organised by a small group of town councillors who were helped on the day by other councillors and local residents.
Cllr Meakin said the event was a big success, helped by brilliant weather.
“The children enjoyed it and school staff felt it was very worthwhile,” he said.
