Uckfield residents aim to give late night shopping a boost

Uckfield residents are joining forces with the town’s Chamber of Commerce and other local organisations to give late night shopping an extra boost this year.

The residents came together when the first phase of High Street highways improvements finished with the aim of helping retailers whose trade suffered during eight weeks of disruption, writes Josh Gibbens.

The group met on Thursday at the Highlands Inn to share ideas and one of the activities they are promoting is a Hunt the Character competition.

Specially designed game board cards will be distributed to local children via school bags ready for late night shopping on December 5.

Numerous companies and individuals have come forward to offer their support by providing prizes, these include a £100 meat voucher, an American food hamper and a bottle of Champagne. More prizes will be welcomed.

Other activities include face-painting to bring extra festive cheer, and there will be more surprises and events on the evening.

Sam Imber, who jointly organised the meeting, also discussed various ideas with Mark Arno from the Chamber of Commerce for the 2015 Christmas evening.  These include potential plans for a local craft fair and a few small fairground rides for younger children.

Mr Arno said it was really positive to see the local community coming together with ideas to support late night shopping.

Local business owners Sam Imber and James Anderson held the meeting in response to requests from the local community during Facebook discussions to bring extra magic to the night.

The overall aim of the group is to increase footfall during the evening, while promoting the long term benefits of getting involved on the night.

If you would like to get involved members of the late night shopping group are encouraging residents and businesses to contact them via their Uckfield Late Night Shopping Facebook page at or by emailing sam.imber@pyragraphics.co.uk.
