Uckfield plans beacon event to mark Queen’s 90th birthday

The Queen’s 90th birthday could be celebrated with the lighting of the beacon at the Victoria Pleasure Ground.

Paul Watson reports

Ideas are at an initial stage but Uckfield Town Council has received an official invitation to take part in what will be a nationwide event from the Pageantmaster for The Queen’s 90th Birthday Beacons, Bruno Peek.

Last night’s meeting (January 18) of the council’s general purposes committee agreed to provide up to £5,000 to mark the Queen’s birthday.

It will be for the council’s environment and leisure committee at a further meeting to decide on the details.

They will be asked to consider splitting the celebrations over two events: one on the Queen’s actual birthday, which falls on a Thursday, and the other on her official birthday, which is on a Saturday, June 11.

A report to councillors on the acutual birthday event said:

“This may result in a simple ceremony and lighting of the Beacon which would not incur any substantial costs or alternatively the council may wish to mark the Queen’s birthday with a more elaborate event including entertainments.

“The event is expected to take place early evening and therefore it is unlikely that a firework display would be appropriate for the event as part of the entertainment.”

General purposes committee members felt holding the major celebration in Uckfield in June would be more likely to attract people because of warmer weather, a lighter evening and would be on a Saturday instead of midweek.

Cllr Chris Macve, Trust Independent, North Ward, urged the council to put on a major effort for what would be a “major milestone in the life of the country”.

He suggested all town organisations be invited to attend and particpate.

*Bruno Peek was pageantmaster for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons in 2012.

Members of the council’s general purposes committee attending the meeting were:

Chair: Cllr Ian Smith, Independent, Ridgewood
Vice-chair: Cllr Paul Meakin, Liberal Democrat, Central

Cllr James Anderson, Trust Independent, North
Cllr Jacqueline Beckford, Liberal Democrat, Ridgewood
Cllr Louise Eastwood, Trust Independent, North
Cllr Keith Everett, Independent, Ridgewood
Cllr Helen Firth, Conservative, Central
Cllr Paul Sparks, Liberal Democrat, North
Cllr Diane Ward, Trust Independent, Central
