Uckfield Mayor and deputy to be elected on Monday

Newly elected and re-elected members of Uckfield Town Council will be choosing a town mayor and deputy mayor on Monday evening.

Current Uckfield Mayor Cllr Ian Smith, left, with deputy mayor Cllr Jeremy Hallett who stood down from the council before the latest election.

Cllr Ian Smith, Independent, has been mayor for the past two years and the deputy mayor was Cllr Jeremy Hallett, one of eight councillors who did not seek re-election when townspeople went to the polls last week.

Eight, a majority of the 15 seats on the council, are held by members of the recently formed Uckfield Trust Independent group. The Liberal Democrats have four seats and the Conservatives one. Independents, including Cllr Smith, have two seats.

The election of mayor and deputy mayor will be held at the annual statutory meeting of the council which will be held in in The Council Chamber at Uckfield Civic Centre on Monday starting at 7pm.

Members will also be appointed to serve on the council’s standing committees, sub-committees and the newsletter editorial panel.

Standing committees include: general purposes, nine members; environment and leisure, nine members; and plans, seven members.

Sub-committees include: personnel, five members, finance, five members, and newsletter editorial panel, three members.

Representatives will also be appointed to complete audits for the council until the annual statutory meeting in 2016, and to outside bodies and the Civic Centre Working Group.

A link to the full agenda of the annual statutory meeting can be found on the Uckfield Town Council website here. Scroll to May 18.

There’s more about the make-up of the new council here: Trust Independent group wins eight of 15 seats on Uckfield Town Council.

• Uckfield News asked today whether Trust Independent members elected as councillors planned to continue work as a group within Uckfield Town Council.

We asked: “Is the group still holding meetings to decide its stance and how to vote? Or has the group now been disbanded so that former members are entirely independent?”

The response was: “I’m sure the team will issue further comment following the meeting on Monday.”
