Story updated at 10.48am, Tuesday, January 29: An Uckfield man died after being hit by a train last night near Buxted.
The rail service was suspended and buses transported passengers between Crowborough and Uckfield.
A British Transport Police (BTP) spokeswoman said they were called to the scene, between Buxted and Crowborough, following the discovery of a man’s body.
She added: “Medics from South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended but the man, thought to be in his forties and from Uckfield, was pronounced dead at the scene, with injuries consistent with being struck by a train.
“A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”
The incident was reported to BTP at 9.43pm. The line was handed back to Network Rail at 11.05pm. Sussex Police were also in attendance.
