Since the Uckfield Junior Squash team’s successful first win in the Sussex SRA leagues two weeks ago, the juniors have had a mixed couple of weekends.
On November 9, Finn Holliday and Leesha Daniells competed in the Chichester Junior Open. Both drew tough opponents in the first round and consequently went into the “plate” events with Leesha triumphing in the Under 13 girls version, thus winning her first squash trophy, writes Stephen Holliday, from Final Score sports shop, who coaches the players.
On Sunday, November 16, the team hosted Dunnings Squash Club with a completely new team as the squad, as is currently fashionable, was “rotated”.
Continuing her strong run of form, Leesha won very comfortably to demonstrate the rapid progress she is making.
Second on was Alexander Darlington in his first ever competitive match against a far more experienced opponent. A little nervous at the start, he got stronger as the match went on but ultimately couldn’t quite overcome his opponent who was just able to use her additional experience to good effect.
At 1-1 in the match, brother Oliver Darlington played an experienced Sussex junior. It was an exciting match that went the full distance swinging one way and then the other. Ultimately the greater experience told in the end with Oliver just losing the fifth game 12-10 resulting in an overall win for Dunnings by 2 matches to 1.
The match was played in very good spirit again and the juniors will have gained valuable experience which should lead to more wins as the season progresses.
