Uckfield broadband speeds are the fastest in Wealden but there are parts of town where relatively high percentages of adults don’t use the internet.
Wealden District Council has been conducting research about internet use as it seeks to enable more people to access its services online.
It wants to target areas of low internet use, see what programmes are in place to help people get online and to investigate how any gaps in support may be addressed.
The council has established that the areas where most people are not using the internet are Polegate South Ward where 21.9% of people don’t use it; Alfriston 19.9%; Polegate North, 19%; Hailsham East, 18.9%; Willingdon, 18.4%; Hailsham South and West, 16.3% and Hailsham Central and North, 15.8%
In Uckfield the ward where the most people don’t use the internet is Uckfield New Town, 13.5%; then comes Uckfield North, 12.6%; and Uckfield Central, 11.2%.
On the other hand the number of people who don’t use the internet in Ridgewood Ward stands at 5.1% – the lowest percentage of all wards in Wealden.
Closest to Ridgewood in percentage terms is Chiddingly and East Hoathly Ward with 7.1% of adults not using the internet.
The fastest broadband speeds of all in Wealden are in Uckfield. In Uckfield Central the speed is 18.6 Mbps; in Uckfield North it is 17.95 Mbps; in Uckfield New Town it is 17.51 and in Ridgewood it is 16.13.
This compares with the worst speed, that experienced at Chiddingly and East Hoathly Ward, being 4.51; Hartfield 4.78 and Heathfield East 4.9.
A report to Wealden Cabinet says: “There is a need to continue to raise awareness of the public to the benefits of being online.
“It is clear there are areas in the district that are less likely to be online. It seems sensible that any support the council gives to help people get online is targeted at those areas in the first instance.
“It is also clear from the feedback gained from the first ‘Coffee, cake computers and a whole lot more’ event that there is a need for a range of styles of learning to assist people to get online.”
