Uckfield-based Design and Display Structures has been awarded a contract to build cladding for 17 towers for a £40 million retail and leisure facility in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
The development will include a 30,250 square metre building, with warehousing, support services and administrative offices, together with internal roads and parking.
It is being built for Trago, a South West-based discount retailer, and will be the company’s first store in Wales.
The store will create 400 jobs in the retail, leisure and warehousing sectors and include a cafe, garden centre, bandstand and adventure dome. There are plans to develop the site further by adding a petrol station and leisure facilities.
Design and Display’s 17 towers will average 20m in height. Three types are required for the £1m project.
Two will be habitable and the tallest, at 22.3m and 5m square on plan, will be a clock tower with a balcony feature, all topped off with a flag pole carrying the Trago banner.
Design and Display has been appointed by main contractor Kier Construction Cardiff to design, manufacture, and install the architectural cladding package.
The kits will be designed and fabricated off-site in fully finished condition ready to be shipped to the site for fast-track hoisting and fixing to the primary steelwork structures around the building perimeter.
Those towers to be inhabited will be enhanced with thermal insulation and double-glazing. The GRP cladding will simulate a variety of features with stone banding and lead-roll roof.
Tower cladding installation works are programmed to begin at the end of Spring 2017.
