Firefighters have returned to Uckfield after helping tackle the blaze at Eastbourne Pier yesterday afternoon and overnight.
They attended yesterday with a fire appliance sent at 3.30pm and a water carrier requested at 4.20pm. The crews were relieved during the night but an Uckfield appliance returned to the scene at 3am to provide relief for others and to continue damping down the structure.
The water carrier worked continuously to ferry water to large dams for the 16 pumps supplying the firefighting jets before returning to Uckfield at 3.30am.
One Uckfield appliance was still at the pier this morning but all had returned at 11am.
Watch manager Ian Ritchie said: “It may seem strange to request a water carrier when a whole sea is available but pumping from the beach is not very practical as the pumps and equipment have to be moved with the tide.”
Our pictures were taken by Karen and Ian Bedwell who were in Eastbourne as the flames spread through the arcade building and afterwards when just a skeleton remained.
