Uckfield firefighters helped contain a blaze which partially destroyed a large farm building in Sheffield Park yesterday afternoon.
Watch manager Ian Ritchie said they were called at 12.55pm and were joined by crews from Barcombe, Forest Row, Lewes, Crowborough and Haywards Heath as the fire threatened to spread to adjacent buildings.
Thirty five firefighters used ground monitors, jets and firefighting foam. Water was supplied by Uckfield’s Bulk Water Carrier and pumping from a nearby stream.
The wooden framed building measuring 40 metres X 20 metres contained a variety of farm machinery and timber products. An adjacent diesel tank ruptured during the incident causing a running fuel fire that threatened to enter the stream.
The Environment Agency attended to advise on controlling run off from the incident and to ensure that the water course was protected as it is a feed to Barcombe reservoir.
Two crews remained at the scene during the evening to damp down remaining hotspots. Nobody was injured during the incident and the cause is under investigation.
