Uckfield estate agent is cautiously optimistic about housing market

Houses at the top end of the market are selling quickly in the Uckfield area at the moment but there is a backlog of buyers wanting to get on to the property ladder, according to a town estate agent..

Chris Tofts from Taylor Tofts said people seemed to be cautiously optimistic and wanting to buy new homes but they were still a little twitchy.

The things holding them back were interest rates, the state of the economy and the question “Is my job secure?”

But reports indicated banks were beginning to lend money again and that would help buyers waiting to get on to the property ladder who needed the bigger mortgages.

Chris said: “It is a mixed market. It is difficult to find homes in the £600,000 to £800,000 band and on two occasions we have sold houses within a matter of days of them coming on the market.”

Historically the market was strong in the autumn, he added. “It is not unusual to be very busy then because people feel confident arriving back from holiday. When the children go back to school they think about buying something.”
