A family publishing business launched in Uckfield last year has expanded rapidly. It employs six full-timers, about 20 freelances around the country and is still recruiting.
Lewis Business Media was founded by husband and wife team John and Liz Lewis, who live on the Harlands Estate in Uckfield. Their son Simon, a qualified chartered accountant, has since joined them as financial controller and commercial manager.
The company, which is based at the Office Village in River Way, behind Waitrose, currently has three magazines, each with websites, and is looking to acquire more.
It owns and has recently re-launched Pig World, and its website, and is organising pig industry awards.
In addition Lewis Business Media has a contract for publishing Wholesale News, a monthly magazine, a website and newsletter on behalf of the Federation of Wholesale Distributors.
It also provides publishing services for The Subpostmaster, the monthly magazine of The National Federation of Subpostmasters.
Managing director and publisher John Lewis, formerly executive director of William Reed Business Media, said the plan was to create a multi-media business based on the four areas he has more than 30 years of experience in running, magazines, websites, events and data.
“It is our view that there is a place for specialist magazines for the foreseeable future, especially in areas where there is a need to communicate regularly with a group, such as trade association members, and/or special interest groups.
“All our products have associated websites and are able to offer many options for online coverage and promotion. In addition, events of one form or another are a huge opportunity in all our markets.”
John added: “All of these services are built on good quality data, and we can also offer data management services.”
Lewis Business Media is looking for an administrator – with the opportunity to progress to office manager – to join its team from September. The role will include some website administration.
John said the successful candidate would need excellent keyboard skills, good knowledge of Word and Excel and a facility with, and interest in, the web and social media.
He said: “A good telephone manner, positive attitude and sense of humour are also important. Training will be given in the web content management areas. There will also be opportunities to attend industry events.”
