Community spirit was one of the things I missed during my time away from Uckfield.
It was that something special which set this small north Wealden town apart from many in Sussex and beyond.
The carnival and festival are good examples of the town coming together but there are many others, as the thriving clubs and societies scene demonstrates.
They are great examples of the people’s “can do” spirit.
Now we have another – the memorial to Belgian wartime pilot, Flt Lt Eugene Seghers, which will be unveiled with proper ceremony later this month. See: Eugene Seghers – the pilot who ‘saved Uckfield’ – forgotten no longer.
Duncan Bennett has managed to persuade, cajole and influence many townsfolk to give of their time and expertise to bring this project to fruition.
He has not relied on official help but instead on community power. People have recognised the cause and responded accordingly.
That response gives me great pride in the people of this town. I look forward to another great occasion.
On social media, there is a running joke that pokes fun at Yorkshire with examples of strange behaviour, hashtagged #onlyinYorkshire.
I give you the opposite side of that coin. #onlyinUckfield. Use it with pride.
See you next Saturday.
