The Town Centre Regeneration Joint Committee announced this morning that the main works would start on Monday, February 22, and last for eight months.
It also confirmed that access to shoppers’ car parks would be available through the works and that access to the High Street would be maintained for vehicles heading south, with diversions for northbound traffic.
Chamber president Bernard Smith, of chartered surveyors Oldfield Smith & Co, said the Chamber was working actively with partner agencies to enable the works to proceed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“Our members can now start to plan with certainty for the practicalities of the construction phase, so that we can ensure that our town remains a vibrant and exciting place to shop and do business, throughout the works and beyond.”
Mr Smith said: “The improvements to our High Street will enhance the reputation of Uckfield as a great destination for a wide variety of independent businesses offering a personal service and unique products not found elsewhere, which of course will be trading normally throughout the scheme.
“There will be challenges ahead, but the message is that it is very much ‘business as usual’ with free car parking in the centre of town.”
Mr Smith added the Chamber was supporting members through a variety of initiatives and was currently exploring the possibility of a business rates reduction to assist those affected by the works.
He said it was also working on a number of promotional opportunities to provide an added incentive for shoppers to come into town and experience all that Uckfield has to offer.”
