Uckfield butcher Daniel Osborne died in a car crash near Horam yesterday morning. He leaves a widow Kayleigh and four-week-old baby Sophie.
Kayleigh said on the DJ Osborne Family Butchers and Simply Meat Co Facebook page that Daniel’s car hit a sheet of ice and then a tree as he was on his way to work.
She said the shop would remain open to continue Dan’s dream. “We will continue trading to keep his legacy alive. Thank you for all your support at this hard time.”
A Facebook page, RIP Daniel Osborne, featuring pictures of Daniel with Kayleigh and Sophie, has been set up in Daniel’s memory.
It was shared on the DJ Osborne Family Butchers and Simply Meat Co Facebook page with the message:
“I have made this Facebook page for Dan. I would really appreciate if everyone could LIKE Dan’s page and Share.
“Kayleigh and Sophie are going to need everyone’s love. So please do it for them. As you can imagine we are totally heart broken.”
Daniel and Kayleigh opened their butcher’s shop in Framfield Road, just over a year ago, after a full re-fit of the premises at number 58.
Daniel said at the time: “Our aim is to provide local people with a quality source of meat and pies.”
The team at the shop works hard looking after customers whether they visit in person, order by phone or online and then having produce ready for collection or delivery.
The shop’s Facebook page is popular for its competitions and it was there that the Osborne family announced the arrival on Sunday, November 30, of Sophie Jessica and then Daniel’s death yesterday.
Comments on yesterday’s post reflect the shock within the community with one person saying: “He was a fantastic man and would do anything to help anyone out in the community.”
Daniel had previously spent eight years working in Pomfrets, Heathfield, which is owned by his step-father Robert Pomfret and mother Phil, before opening the shop in Uckfield with Kayleigh.
She said on the shop Facebook page: “It saddens me beyond belief to inform all our customers that Daniel Osborne, my fantastic husband and loving father to our four-week-old baby daughter Sophie passed away this morning in a car accident.”
Police were called to the accident at 7am yesterday in Furnace Lane, Lions Green, where Daniel’s Land Rover Defender had left the road and collided with a tree.
A doctor from the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance team pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police said temperatures around minus two degrees centigrade and sheet ice hampered the approach of emergency services, and Furnace Lane was closed beyond its junction with the A267 at Sharp’s Corner, Horam.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and to beware of icy conditions generally.
