Through his business Dowling Consultants, Chris offers coaching and mentoring on a freelance and independent basis.
He also works with the Government’s Business Growth Service as a registered Growth Accelerator coach. This service is available to micro and small businesses who want to access business support and who have the ambition, capacity and opportunity to achieve high growth.
Whether working with private clients or Growth Accelerator clients, Chris uses his experience to look at his clients’ businesses, see where they are, understand where they want to go and then guide them on a route to business success to increase sales, make better profits and a build brighter future.
He is also able to use his networks of business contacts, built over the 35 years, to introduce skilled associates able to help on the journey. These services include IT support, website design, book-keeping, training, human resources, access to finance, accountancy and legal services.
Chris said: “We have everything a new business, or one looking to expand and develop, needs in order to make progress and build a successful future.”
He added: “I can spend an hour or two with a client going through their issues and challenges to develop and agree a business plan; follow ups are always needed to check on progress and deal with any wrinkles.”
To qualify as a Growth Accelerator coach Chris had to prove his credentials of having strong commercial acumen and first-hand knowledge of growing a business. He supplied references and went through an interview process before undertaking training.
Growth Accelerator helps identify barriers to growth and provide tailored support that fits an individual’s needs, including coaching, consultancy, mentoring, training and access to finance and export advice.
The service is available to an already thriving and successful business which is ready for the next big phase of growth and expansion.
Growth programmes offer a framework to help build a successful growth strategy, discover new routes to funding and investment, unlock capacity for innovation, harness the power of a company’s people, and unite and excite the leadership team. The Growth Accelerator is open to businesses with between one and 250 employees.
Where people are looking to start their own businesses and have no idea what to do Chris can set them on the right track. Where is the business plan, the marketing plan, what is the strategy? Where are you with the bank? Should you be a limited company or a sole trader? Where is your market, where will you trade and how will you trade?
Chris said: “All those issues are fundamental to the smooth running of a business, but not necessarily obvious to a person starting in business.”
Chris was in his 20s when he was involved in running a family business and said it would have helped greatly to have had the support of an experienced mentor.
“The most vulnerable time for a new business is in year one. If you get through that you move on to expand and start thinking about taking on staff and other and commitments – more costs, liabilities, thinking about employment law and borrowing money from the bank.”
“All of these are possible pitfalls and issues that someone new to developing a business may be unaware of. An experienced mentor can help make a business more efficient, develop quicker, improve performance and make more money.”
