Uckfield beacon will be lit tonight to mark Queen’s 90th birthday

Celebrations for The Queen’s 90th birthday take place in Uckfield tonight when Holy Cross Church bells ring out and a beacon is lit at the Victoria Pleasure Ground.beacon

Listen for the bells at 8.30pm. The beacon will be lit at the same time with Uckfield Mayor Cllr Louise Eastwood being helped in the task by Ron Cragg who was 90 last week.

There will be entertainment at the Victoria ground from 8pm when Uckfield Performance Ensemble will play. Refreshments will be available too.

The event is being organised by Uckfield Town Council with the help of the Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society.

The Queen has two birthdays. Today, April 21, is the day she turns 90 but her official birthday will be celebrated on June 11 when there will be another event in Uckfield with local groups entertaining residents throughout the evening at the Victoria ground.

More than 250 beacons are expected to be lit across the country tonight.

• The last time Uckfield’s beacon was lit was in August 2015 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day. See an Uckfield News story about that: Arthur Razzell remembers horror of Ngasaki and Hiroshima after atomic bombs.
