Uckfield beacon lighting to mark Legion’s 100th birthday

Uckfield beacon on the Victoria Pleasure Ground will be lit later this year to mark the centenary of the British Legion.

Arrangements for the lighting are being developed by the town council with the Royal British Legion (RBL).

The beacon lighting would be on August 28.

Sussex RBL branches are considering organising a Torch of Remembrance to criss-cross the county from Rye in the east to Wittering in the west.

A highpoint will, organisers hope, be the lighting of beacons by towns and villages.

The British Legion was formed on May 15, 1921, bringing together four national organisations of ex-Servicemen that had established themselves after World War 1.
