Uckfield-based company builds spectacular ceiling feature for hotel

Uckfield-based Design & Display Structures have developed a spectacular ceiling feature for the Atrium Hotel, Hatton Cross, at Heathrow.

It rises from the curved reception desk, fanning outwards with its fingers reach for the main curtain wall facade.

The feature works cleverly around the various bulkhead levels, mirrored walls and various immovable structural support elements.

Manufactured

The GRP petal feature was 3D Rhino modelled, and manufactured off site, enabling a kit of lightweight modular pre-finished ribs to be delivered to site.

Gripple wire was suspended from submersed connection points, carefully co-ordinated earlier during the design phase between D&D and dry lining subcontractor.

Columns

At ground level the building’s structural columns were at offset positions so a pair of oval shaped GRP columns with trumpet like capitals were used to disguise the situation.

Once the GRP components were installed the final effect was completed by strings of coloured LED lighting attached to the top face creating a fascinating glow overhead and patterns on the ceiling.
