Two worlds of Jamie Bedwell – triathlon and podiatry

Uckfield-raised triathlete Jamie Bedwell is now working as a podiatrist as he continues training to achieve his ambition of competing in the Olympic Games.

He qualified from the University of Brighton this year and is working three days a week in the NHS and alternate Fridays, and Saturday afternoons, at a clinic in Ridgewood run by his mother Karen Bedwell.

At the same time he is training as a triathlete every morning and evening, before and after work, with a full day of training each Wednesday.

His ambition to compete at the very highest level, including the Olympic Games, remains the same.

It’s been a big year for Jamie, who married fellow triathlete Abi in March, and graduated from the University of Brighton this summer.

He is feeling happy about the future with the podiatry making his sporting efforts sustainable.

He said: “I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work in healthcare in order to create a sustainable future on elite level sport. This is thanks to those closest to me who help support me in order to make this possible as well as a heavy reliance on my faith.”

Jamie, 21, continues to make positive progress on the British circuit with a 13th position finish at this year’s U23 European Championships qualifier held in Wales last month.

Great Britain

Jamie hopes to build on this result in the next two seasons and qualify to represent Great Britain in the European Cup series.

There’s one more race remaining this season at Hever Castle on September 29 which is Olympic distance.

Jamie is looking forward to a belated honeymoon with Abi in Canada, but is also planning to take part in the Uckfield Park Run on Saturday, October 5. Then in November the cross country season begins.

In his working world Jamie plans to build on knowledge gained through his degree to treat a variety of patients, including those suffering with sports injuries, trauma, or injuries caused by individual biomechanics, type one and two diabetes, nail infections or cosmetic complaints as well as general foot health care.

Karen said she was thrilled that Jamie was now joining the family-run clinic and he said it was really nice to be working with his mum.
