Two candidates stand in Uckfield Town Council by-election

Two candidates are standing in a by-election for an Uckfield town councillor to represent Ridgewood Ward.

They are Jeremy Beesley, Independent, of 24 Sycamore Court, Uckfield, and Gareth Looker, Labour, of 1 Petreed Cottages, Eastbourne Road, Uckfield.

The election has been called following the resignation of Jacqueline Beckford, one of three councillors elected to represent Ridgewood in May 2015.

She was initially elected as a Liberal Democrat but subsequently became an Independent.

Mr Beesley stood in the same ward in 2015 under the Trust Independent banner. He polled 367 votes and failed to get elected. Jacqueline Beckford polled 650, Keith Everett, Independent, 804, and Ian Smith, Independent 1,131.

Mr Looker is chair of Uckfield Labour Party.

Uckfield News has invited each candidate to submit 100 words about themselves and what they would like to do for Ridgewood.

The information will be published on the website nearer the time of the election, which takes place  on Thursday, August 31.

The last time to register to vote for the election is midnight on Monday, August 14.

The last time to apply for a postal vote, or to amend an existing postal, proxy, or postal proxy vote is 5pm on Tuesday, August 15.

The last time to apply for a new proxy vote is 5pm on Tuesday, August 22.
