Rental bikes at Horam, the only location where they can be found on the Cuckoo Trail now because of vandals.

Two bike hire stations on Cuckoo Trail close because of vandalism

Owners of a bike hire business are only able to operate from one point on the Cuckoo Trail instead of the three planned because of vandalism.

CountryBikes can still be booked via a mobile app and collected at Horam but they have been withdrawn from Heathfield and Polegate.

Tim Seddon, who set up the business with his wife Suzy, said they were working to find a solution which will keep the bikes safe enabling them to return them to all locations.

Badly damaged

But at the moment that can’t happen. He said there was a very isolated incident at Polegate last week and three bikes were very badly damaged at Heathfield.

“Anything you can imagine was done to them. The gears were kicked in, handle bars bent, baskets smashed, locks damaged and tyres slashed.

“We are a family run business, and my wife and I run it, so we obviously need to take stock before we put the bikes back out.”

Tim said they were working with Wealden District Council to see what could be done.

In the meantime he said people who were renting the bikes at Horam and returning them to the same point were really enjoying them.

He received one email from people who only planned to go out for an hour having not been on bikes for many years but they enjoyed it so much ended up cycling 17 miles.

Tim said: “It’s lovely to get that type of feedback.”
