Police said they received several calls at around 5.30pm. Some six to ten caravans were involved and traffic on the A22 and A26 was subject to delays because of the incident.

A spokesman said officers attended to monitor the situation and a marked police vehicle was placed across the farm entrance.

“By around 5.50pm the travellers had formed into a convoy and moved off south along the A22. Their destination was unknown.”
