Town council plans to remove Civic Centre atrium

Uckfield Town Council is planning to remove the atrium from the Civic Centre roof.

A statement, accompanying a planning application before Wealden Council, says the atrium/lantern has been a source of penetrating dampness over a long period and remedial works have been unsuccessful.

The statement adds: “The lead-covered lantern is also susceptible to damage from attempted theft of the lead, as has occurred in the past, with parts of the structure already re-covered in fibreglass, as opposed to lead.”

After the removal of the atrium and associated glazing, including structure, the aim is to continue the hipped roof up to the central ridge to the front section of the roof, with continuation of main front slope across the existing lantern/skylight area.

A statement accompanying planning application WD/2020/2318/F says the proposed work will not deviate from the existing building lines and thus maintains separation distance from the property to roads and neighbouring properties.
