Town centre regeneration in Uckfield set to speed ahead

Rapid progress is planned for a £25 million redevelopment of Uckfield town centre.

Completion has been pencilled in to be before 2020.

First signs that the massive scheme – which could include a new supermarket – is on the move have come with news that a number of potential development partners have already signalled an interest in taking on the project.

A committee made up of the county, district and town councils – which between them own large tracts of land in the centre of Uckfield – is working to bring a masterplan to life. The plan was agreed some years ago following consultations with residents.

It stalled because of the economic downturn but is now very much back on the cards.

Drop-in session on Uckfield regeneration

A drop-in session will be held at the Civic Centre on October 3 to launch the latest stage of the plan. It is likely to be held from 3 to 8pm, with presentations about what is planned being repeated at various times.

Ten potential developers have already expressed “strong” interest in becoming a partner with the councils to carry out the development.

Official documentation is being sent to the companies with bids needing to be in by November 7.

Evaluation of the bids is timetabled to continue until the first week of February next year.

Holy Cross School site decision awaited

Announcement of the preferred contractor is set to come later that month.

The question of whether Holy Cross School will be redeveloped or relocated has not been made. It is seen as a key decision as it will affect tender documents and specifications. A final decision is awaited.

The three councils are carrying out their work through the Uckfield Town Centre Regeneration Joint Committee.

Uckfield 20/20

Joint committee member, Cllr Roy Galley, said Uckfield 20/20 might be a good name because “we don’t want this to drag on”. He said if the scheme was not delivered by 2020 there would be something “seriously wrong”.

*This scheme is separate to the town centre improvement scheme which is concentrated around roadworks along the High Street, changes to the bus station and Network Rail building a rail station car park. More news on that project here
