The Highlands, Uckfield, is ready for business

There will be the chance to look inside The Highlands pub in Ridgewood tonight for the first time following refurbishment.

The new leaseholders, the Ridley family, will open the doors to serve drinks only from 5pm and having been lucky enough to visit last night I can assure you it is well worth a visit – the place has been transformed, writes Cathy Watson.

A tired dark pub has vanished to be replaced by welcoming, light and airey spaces but also little alcoves to settle into for an evening and a sports bar for more active socialising.

Surely, with the Ridley family having committed to a 20 year lease, The Highlands must soar to success. Ian, Val, Matt, Nick and Caroline already have a good track record at The Cock at Ringmer.

The kitchen at The Highlands was only completed at 3pm yesterday but staff turned out superb meals for guests gathered by the family as a thank you for support in a 16-month journey to take on the pub.

Tonight, Thursday, October 16, when the doors open there will be the chance to meet staff, explore the pub and pick up Christmas and main menus.

Tomorrow, Friday, October 17, there will be a grand opening party. The doors open at 5pm and two bands – South of Saturn and Pop the Cork – will alternate to play throughout the evening from 7pm.

As the staff settle in it will be bookings only for meals over the weekend but all are excited about the future.
