Sussex Support Service becomes not-for-profit organisation

Sussex Support Service, which provides a day club for people with support needs such as dementia, is now a not-for-profit organisation.

The service founded by Margaret Dode Angel, and still run by her, is now a Community Interest Company (CIC).

The change enables it to access funding previously not available to help it grow and continue to support older people with varying needs as members of community groups.

Any profits made by Sussex Support Service CIC will be used for the good of the community, rather than being paid to shareholders. The business cannot be sold and can only be transferred to another CIC or charity.

Two new volunteer non-executive directors will join Margaret Dod Angel on the board to act in a similar way as the board of trustees in a charity.

Margaret said current or future service users would not be affected by the change and a quality programme of activities would continue to be put together by service users and the activities support team.

The programme includes regular musical and other entertainers, arts and crafts, games such as dominoes and quizzes, reminiscing, cooking, gardening projects, musical activities, outings, special community events, gentle exercise, projects in conjunction with the local community, walks and support to access other community groups and activities locally.

Lunch menus are put together by service users and staff with healthy choices cooked freshly on site every day. The menu is changed quarterly so seasonal dishes are available.

The service is available to Adult Social Care referred individuals, other agency referred and self-referred people.
