Chris Howarth, who was jailed in 2015 for sexual offences against children, has died.
The former deputy principal at Uckfield Community Technology College, and non-stipendiary priest at Holy Cross Church, was a prominent figure in Uckfield.
He was imprisoned at HMP Lewes and died on Tuesday, aged 72, in hospital.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”
Howarth was jailed for ten years with the sentence extended to add five years on licence after his release.
