Ridgewood Village Hall works start brought forward

Refurbishment of Ridgewood Village Hall will start in eight days time.

The work is beginning early because Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted on the construction industry while at the same time the hall remains closed to hirers as part of the Coronavirus lockdown measures.

Two extra rooms for small groups will be created along with a new access, better access for the disabled and improvements to the main hall and lavatories.

Ridgewood Village Hall management committee has given the go-ahead for the works to start on stage one of the project on May 26.

Karen Bedwell, who chairs the management committee, said immediate neighbours and hall users had been told.

“Originally set to start in July, we have brought the date forward now the government have lifted the restrictions on the construction industry to get the hall refurb completed as soon as possible so that we can get it up and running for all our local groups to continue once public buildings can reopen again.

“The committee and local people have worked so hard to get us to this stage and it is so exciting.”

The two extra rooms for small groups to hire can also be combined as a meeting room as well as refurbing the hall.

Mrs Bedwell added: “Later in the year, with the generosity of Taylor Wimpy, we also hope to replace the kitchen.

“Once completed Uckfield Town Council will enlarge and resurface the car park.

“This is just stage one and we hope to continue raising money to add the planned extension in the future and a community garden.”

Completion date

Mrs Bedwell said there were many people to thanks and the full list would in due course be published on the hall’s website, along with a book on show in the hall to demonstrate how the community had come together to get the project off the ground.

The refurb is expected to last 8 to 10weeks.

Mrs Bedwell said:  “In the midst of the challenging times that we find ourselves in, it is so nice to have some positive news to announce that will go on to benefit the community as a whole once we can return to a more normal way of life.

“It will be more important than ever to have a village hall that can support community projects and support groups once the threat of Covid-19 has passed.

“We wish all our groups and hall users the very best and hope to see them back at the ‘new hall’ very soon.”

Sponsorship for new items for the hall is still needed, plus someone to make a new sign. Contact Mrs Bedwell at ridgewoodvillagehall@gmail.com.

  • Ridgewood Village is owned by Uckfield Town Council and is leased to (full repairing) to Ridgewood Village Hall Management Committee for a 25-year term from April 2010. The car park is owned by the town council and is not part of the lease.
