• Ridgewood Village Hall car park upgrade
• Hall refurbishment project to go forward
A major upgrade of Ridgewood Village Hall (RVH) and its car park are to be undertaken.
This year will also see internal refurbishment works undertaken to bring the building up to date at an estimated cost of more than £70,000.
Ridgewood Village Hall and the car park are owned by Uckfield Town Council.
The hall is leased (full repairing) to Ridgewood Village Hall management committee for 25 years from April 2010.
The car park is not park of the lease and its upkeep is the full responsibility of the town council.
Extra car park capacity
Agreement to go ahead with the car park works in two phases was given by members of Uckfield Town Council’s general purposes committee on Monday (March 10).
The first stage will extend the car park, taking in the current grassed area, to provide more spaces, with stage two giving a final tarmac finish and lining.
Members of the hall committee are happy with the work going ahead in two stages, a report to the meeting of the general purposes committee said.
The meeting also received details of the refurbishment, which is a village hall management committee project.
Work is expected to take between six and eight weeks and during that time the committee will not receive any income for hall hire.
The Charity Commission recommends there should be working capital for three to six months for the hall to fall back on doing this time.
Councillors agreed to the temporary transfer up to £11,000 to the RVH committee during the refurbishment period as a “fall back”, if needed.
Later, Karen Bedwell, who chairs the RVH management committee, told this website that they had now gone out to tender to local firms and is on schedule to begin the phase one of the refurbishment plans in the summer 2020 which will include the extension and renovation of the car park when the refurb is completed by the autumn.
“This is a really exciting time for RVH and there has been so much support and generosity from Uckfield Town Council, local businesses, local people and hall users and a lot of work by RVH committee behind the scenes that has got us to this point,” she said.
“It is a real community project which is fantastic.
“We continue to fundraise for the extras like new tables, kitchen equipment etc – there’s a Bunny Hunt and Spring Fair April 11 (10-4pm)
