Residents’ views sought on Uckfield phone box removals

Update

Residents living in the areas where BT public phone boxes could be removed in Uckfield are to be asked for their views.

Town councillors debated the issue last night (August 5) and there was a general feeling not to make objections to BT’s plans.

However, it was agreed residents should be asked for their views.

Planned meetings of the Manor Park and Hempstead Fields Residents’ Association and a similar group at Church Coombe are being held this week.

Our original story

Two BT telephone boxes could be removed from Uckfield. They are on the Manor Park and Church Coombe estates.

BT is consulting on the proposal and says there has been low usage of both.

Three calls have been made from the telephone box at the junction of Browns Lane with Browns Close, and five have been made from the one at the junction of Manor Way and Crown Close in the last 12 months.

The BT consultation continues until September 12 and Uckfield Town Council is being asked for its view at a meeting tonight.

The council also has the option to consider whether it wishes to adopt a telephone box.

A report for tonight’s meeting says the telephone box at Browns Close was mentioned in another formal consultation undertaken by British Telecom in December 2016.

Feedback

At that time the council said the box at Browns Close should not be removed, based on feedback from members of the public.

Thirty calls had been made from there in the previous 12 months compared with three reported this time.

The council made no objection in 2016 to removing telephone boxes in New Road, Ridgewood and Ringles Cross.
