Raw sewage leaks into the River Uck in Uckfield

Update on Friday, May 15: A sewer which was causing raw sewage to leak into the River Uck yesterday was unblocked last night, according to one of the owners of a business nearby.

Bernard Smith, from chartered surveyors Oldfield Smith & Co said that at around 8pm the road along Mill Lane was being jet washed and disinfected.

Mr Smith said: “Quite a lot of ‘water’ leaked into the Uck as it was pouring out of two manholes for around 4-5 hours. It was the environmental impact which worried me, but the rain will have helped to dilute this.”

From our earlier report:

Mr Smith said: “Southern Water are responsible for the sewer and have been on site for a while but have told me that the blockage is in the High Street and they can’t get in to clear it in view of the traffic.”

He added: “The Environment Agency have been down to assess pollution issues.”
