Preparations being made to build coffee lounge at Staverton Nursery

Preparations are being made for a coffee lounge to be built and opened to the public at Staverton Nursery, at Halland, near Uckfield.

A planning application has been submitted to extend what was originally a retail sales building and store, and move offices from the ground floor to the first floor.

The four-bay extension, at the back of the building, would reach to the end of a new glasshouse.

This would replace a semi-sheltered sales area – to the right of the building as you look at it from the car park, where garden furniture is displayed at the moment – so the coffee lounge can be accommodated there.

A statement with the planning application says the retail sales building is an unheated space which has historically been used for the display of weather vulnerable items, for the storage of growing media and allowing sheltered display during the winter or adverse weather.

Maintaining and increasing the floor space has become more important recently for displaying an increasing range of more sophisticated garden furniture in a group setting.

The statement concludes: “The proposals, which are within the site, are deemed neighbourly and are necessary to further sustain the business and underwrite the investment of recent improvements that have been well received by the general public.”
