Praise for Biffa and its ‘first class’ refuse collection service

Biffa took over refuse collection in Wealden last year and has been praised for its ‘first class’ service.

A “first class” refuse collection service is now being provided in Wealden and Biffa the company responsible has received fulsome praise from district councillors.

Cllr Roy Galley, portfolio holder for waste management, emphasised his appreciation of the company’s performance over the period of their contract – they took over from Kier in June 2019 – and asked for this to be passed on to managers and staff.

The praise followed a presentation by Trevor Elliott, senior business manager at Biffa, to a meeting of the Wealden Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Minutes of the meeting said Biffa’s first year had been driven by mobilisation and compromised by challenge.

The minutes said: “Whilst Biffa anticipated and legislated for a certain degree of challenge, under no circumstances did they envisage the level that was incurred.

“The team encountered legacy after legacy from the previous contractor, including thousands of outstanding container tasks and receiving inaccurate employee liability information.

“Nevertheless, Biffa’s resilience prevailed, and their performance throughout the last 15 months had highlighted this.”

Biffa took over a service from Kier which was dogged by complaints and described at the time as “unacceptable”  by Cllr Galley. The contract was terminated early with Biffa taking over in June 2019.
