Pothole total nothing to shout about, says Observer

I saw East Sussex County Council yesterday (April 1) announcing it had repaired 890 potholes in East Sussex during the previous week.

One assumes it wasn’t an April Fool’s Day joke, although the social media “broadcast” came out before noon.

Pothole Tweet

Frankly, 890 potholes filled appears to be a drop in the ocean. It feels to me that there are 890 potholes in Uckfield alone.

Driving around East Sussex – and to be fair beyond – I think the highways authorities at all levels have well and truly dropped the ball.

Potholes, dreadful litter on the verges, kerb stones broken or missing, worn-out white lines, dirty directional and warning signs . . . no pride, no care and surely no satisfaction in a job well done.

Great news: the Hempstead Meadows and West Park nature reserves are to get supporters’ groups.

The town council will I am sure find that this band of people will bring many talents to benefit the reserves, which are so vital as Uckfield continues to grow.

Supporters’ groups is such a good name; much better than committee.

Committee gives the feeling of sitting around talking in a room; supporters’ group sends the message of actually doing something to promote and help (with professional guidance) in the reserves.

*Idea for the Southern Rail Gala on the Uckfield Line: A week of no cancellations and on-time arrivals.

Comments from Uckfield News readers:

Owen Hoy emailed to say: “I must echo the views of Observer below:

Potholes, dreadful litter on the verges, kerb stones broken or missing, worn-out white lines, dirty directional and warning signs . . . no pride, no care and surely no satisfaction in a job well done.

“I drove to and from Gatwick Airport on Wednesday via Forest Row and then to and from Tunbridge Wells on Friday via Crowborough and finally to and from Eastbourne on Saturday and frankly the grass verges are a complete and utter disgrace and an embarrassment to me littered with paper, plastic, drinks cans and bottles to name but a few.

“Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council should be ashamed of themselves. So why are we paying increased council taxes this year?

Daniel Sims emailed Uckfield News to say: “Why doesn’t Observer ask the council when they are going to fill 890 potholes in Uckfield instead of just writing it in a blog?

“The potholes in Uckfield are dangerous especially in Downsview Crescent and Browns Lane. Awful. We need action, not just someone kicking up a fuss.

“I am a cyclist and it won’t be long until someone comes off and snaps a collar bone due to these holes.”

Andy Lazenby says on the Uckfield News Facebook page: “Agreed. Too many potholes around still. And the repairs just finished on the speed humps in Maresfield are terrible. One patch of Tarmac by the village recreation ground has been done that quick it’s like driving over rumble strips. No pride in their work at all.”

Russell Jackson says on our Facebook page: “To ensure good work requires supervision which the council made redundant.”
