A radiotherapy service could be provided at Eastbourne District General Hospital saving many cancer patients a journey out of East Sussex for treatment.
Most people from the East Sussex Downs and Weald Trust area, which includes Uckfield, travel to Brighton at the moment but a proposal is being considered for the Brighton team to operate an outreach service in Eastbourne.
A report went to East Sussex County Council's Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee last week about a review of radiotherapy service provision for East Sussex residents experiencing cancer.
The aim of the review was to meet population needs now and in the future, improve access and ensure clinical outcomes were maintained and improved where possible.
The committee was told the prevalence of cancer in East Sussex is above both the South East Coast area and the England averages but the age of the population was considered a key contributory factor as the highest percentage of cancer occurs in people over the age of 65.
“By 2016 it is estimated there will be 2,900 new cases of cancer per annum in the East Sussex Hospitals Trust catchment area of whom 52 per cent will need radiotherapy,” said the report. The full report to the committee can be seen here.
